Buson (1716-1784)

Below is a poem of Buson', along with my commentary and response.

His Holiness the Abbot

His Holiness the Abbot
is shitting
in the withered fields.
Buson

Old man Buson is indiscriminate, showering wisdom on rich and poor alike.

Fertilizer
dropping from the sky
lands nowhere.

Buson was a Japanese poet and painter from the Edo period. The great poets Basho and Issa were also products of this era. English version of Buson by Lucien Stryk and Takashi Ikemoto (1988),The Penguin Book of Zen Poetry.
